The Job
Training Manual Design
This is one of my favorites from the vault and dates back to my after-school teaching days. This was a whole program for the 2012 Pro-Youth/HEART Summer Training session. The team that came up with that year’s theme of “Olympic Gold” wanted an ‘olympic’ feel to the poster and I drew inspiration from an Algerian postage stamp for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles which had a flame-shaped dove atop the Olympic Torch. I was very much into origami (if you’ve seen Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, you understand this), a fascination I sort of still have but I had started it a decade even before I ever thought of doing this. I can still do this in under a minute, but I would fold my tip dollars into hearts for servers at restaurants. The final shape of my origami dollars is what I traced for the heart on the dove’s beak.
This was the final product of nearly a week’s work of “origamifying” various versions of a dove before I landed on this one. I even had origami-themed “medals” all over the bottom, but the training team decided that it looked too confusing. It’s really a shame I no longer have my original working documents anymore because I would have loved to have a higher-resolution file of that “Save The Date” card on here as well.
